The EcoSport (pronounced Echosport) is an all-new vehicle for the US Market this year. With trends moving away from sedans to SUV's, Ford needed a vehicle to compete against the smaller foreign brands storming the market like Subaru, Honda, and Toyota. The answer? To bring over the number one selling vehicle in South America and European success, the Ford EcoSport.

The EcoSport will be available in both Front wheel drive and All wheel drive, the latter being the more prominent one here in Utah. It will also come with two available engines each paired with a particular powertrain. The front wheel drive will come with the 1.0l EcoBoost engine with Auto Start-Stop Technology and a 6-speed Select Shift automatic transmission. This engine is the same engine currently found in the Ford Focus. Its rated at 123 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque which though sounds light is very capable (or so I'm told by Ford, as I'm yet to drive one). The other Engine is again shared with the Ford Focus and that is the 2.0l Ti-VCT I-4 also with Auto Start-Stop Technology and 6-speed Select Shift automatic transmission, which is only available with the All-Wheel Drive.

To be honest I was extremely worried about this pairing as the vehicle weighs 500lbs heavier than the Focus. I was worried that the EcoSport may be sluggish and lethargic and would be noticeable especially here in Salt Lake tackling mountain passes like Parleys or Wolf Creek Pass. What I didn't expect was how quick and nimble the vehicle was for only 166 horsepower and 149 lb-ft of torque. The EcoSport got up to cruising speed fairly well and glided at the higher speeds of 70 to 80 mph (Please don't tell the boys in blue). The vehicle also gets slightly and I do mean slightly better gas mileage than the Escape.  Expect to be averaging in the high 20s and remember this is not a vehicle designed to beat the Escape in gas mileage but in price point and versatility.

The EcoSport price point starts at $19,995 for a front wheel drive but don't expect to see many of them on dealerships lots. What you can expect is to be in that $22-28,000 range. The model featured in most of my photos was an SE and had a ton of nice options and surprisingly was only priced at $26,695 a whole $8000 cheaper than its same equipped Ford Escape. With this low of a price point for an All-Wheel Drive, I am sure we will see a lot on college campuses like the University of Utah here in Salt Lake or down in Provo at BYU.
The EcoSport will also be available in four trims the S, the SE, the SES and the Titanium. So let's take a look at each of those trims and see what options are standard and what options are available.

The S Trim
Like with all S trim models found on Fords, this is the most basic of the four trim levels. The S starts at $19,995 for the standard Front Wheel Drive vehicle and moves to $21,495 for the All Wheel Drive option. As with other S trim level Fords outside cosmetics such as the grill and door handles will be a black plastic. The wheel, however, is not a hubcap which is nice and instead will be a 16inch Magnetic Low Gloss-Painted Aluminum wheel. Features like Active Grille Shutters, Power steering, and ABS are all standard as are safety features like the new 10 airbags found throughout the vehicle (4 front,4 side, and 2 canopies) Rearview Camera and LATCH system a must have for those with little ones like me.
Inside you'll find just one option for color and that is the medium stone cloth interior that holds up against dirt well. The seat will also lack power meaning you'll have to work out those muscles to get a perfect position. However, I was happy to see that Sync with 911 assist has become a standard option and you also have the option of getting the Cargo Management Package and Remote Start for a much cheaper fee than going aftermarket. As for Exterior Color, four of the 10 are unavailable those colors are Canyon Ridge, Blue Candy and the two Tri-coat colors White Platinum and Ruby Red.

The SE Trim
The SE Trim, in my opinion, will be the most popular of all four trim levels mainly due to its price point and bank for the buck. The SE starts at $22,905 for the Front Wheel Drive and rises to $24,405 for the All-wheel Drive, which is crazy good. It will feature all the standard features of the S trim while adding some features and upgrading others
Upgrades are as follows. The daytime running lights change from Halogen to Signature LED lights. The black grill becomes Silver painted and the side black mirrors become body colored. Also upgraded on the exterior are the 16inch wheels that go from magnetic to shadow silver and become better quality. On the inside, the stone cloth which was the only option has now become two options with an upgraded Stone cloth interior and my preference an Ebony black cloth. Also, all the exterior colors become available (though the canyon ridge must have the black interior). Sync 3 is also a standard option and can be upgraded if you select the SE Convenience Package.
Here is where it gets interesting because the new standard features include Power Moonroof, Intelligent Access with Push button start, Electronic Temperature control, Reverse sensing and heated front seats and remember you get all that for $24,405! Also available are the Cold Weather Package, the Cargo Management Package and the Interior Protection Package (All listed below)

The SE Convenience Package Which Retails for $1,795 is an option that is a must-have package. Only available on the SE trim this package adds so many innovative and safety features to your already fantastic Ford Ecosport. Included in the package is the following a 110V/150W AC Power Outlet enough to power a laptop. Ambient lighting a feature that allows you to adjust the interior lighting to seven different colors. BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-traffic alert that alerts you with a flashing light inside mirror of oncoming vehicles. Upgraded entertainment system with 7 speakers SYNC 3 with Navigation and the all-new Sync connect which offers a phone app that allows you to Remote start your vehicle, lock and unlock doors and so much more.

The SE Convenience Package
  • 110V/150W AC Power Outlet
  • Ambient Lighting
  • BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Seven (7) Speakers
  • SYNC 3 with Voice Activated Touchscreen Navigation System, Sirius XM Traffic and Travel Link. An 8" LCD Capacitive Touchscreen in Center Stack with Swipe and Pinch-to-Zoom Capability.
  • SYNC Connect
    • Remote start, lock and unlock vehicle
    • Schedule specific times to remotely start vehicle
    • Locate parked vehicle
    • Check vehicle status
    • Wi-Fi hotspot connects up to 10 devices

The SES Trim
The SES is back and if you're a Ford fan then you will know that the SES is all about looks. Starting at $26,740 and only available in All-wheel drive this vehicle is every bit worth that price tag. The exterior grill becomes Painted magnetic and the headlamps have black bezels and the tail lamps get blacked out (both of which look awesome in the black) The Roof rack also gets crossbars the only Ecosport to come standard with them. The wheel also increases in size to the 17inch Dark Tarnish which again looks awesome in black. Interior has only one stand-alone option and I hope you like the color orange becomes someone at Ford does (Remember the Raptor for 17) the interior is upgraded to a black leather with Ebony cloth inserts and Orange accents which in non-fancy terms is four Orange stripes. The Orange is also found splashed all over the interior. On the door trims, above the glove box, around the center shifter and just below the new look touchscreen with Sync 3. While I'm sure people love it I'm not a huge fan and would have preferred a carbon fiber look but hey ho. The SES also loses a few exterior color options as Race Red and Blue Candy become unavailable. The SES will still have all the standard features of the S and SE but will add a few to give a reason for the price. Like my Mum always says it's not all about looks. Becoming standard are features like BLIS which is only available in a package on the SE. Also, Rain sensing window Wipers and an extra speaker turning the SE's from a 6 to a 7 which I can only assume is a Bass. All in all, this again is worth its money but one you may have to see in person unless you love Orange. Also available are the Cold Weather Package, the Cargo Management Package and the Interior Protection Package (All listed below)

The Interior Protection Package is available on the SE, SES and Titanium trim level Ecosports. The package retails for $195 and provides protection from staining or dirtying the carpets. Included in this package are front and back thick rubber floor liners and a cargo mat. This is a must-have in Utah and will save you money when compared to aftermarket protection.

Interior Protection Package
  • Cargo Mat
  • Floor Liners, Front and Rear

Note: Not available with SE, SES or Titanium Cold Weather Package

The Titanium Trim
I didn't see us selling many of these as I thought the market would be stuck on price ($25,740 for a Front Wheel Drive and $27,240 for an All Wheel Drive) So of course, the first one we sell is a Titanium. To be honest it again is worth it (man I have a crush on this vehicle). As for features, it has all the same standard features as the S, SE, and SES but with some slightly different look features. It too like the SES has 17inch rim this time it's a Premium dark also the Grille is Chrome as are the door handles. The only real noticeable upgrade is the B&O audio system which is awesome and the all leather seating in stone or black. Again all color are available but the Canyon Ridge must have the Black leather interior. Also available are the Cold Weather Package, the Cargo Management Package and the Interior Protection Package (All listed below)

The Cold Weather Package is an available option found on the SE, SES and Titanium trim on the Ford Ecosport. The package retails for $395 on both the SE and SES and $340 on the Titanium. It is well worth every penny especially for those living here in Utah. The package includes thick rubber floor liners for both front and back, which can protect carpets against salt stains and dirt. Both mirrors will become heated and will melt snow when defrost is activated. The steering wheel also becomes heated, a personal favorite of mine keeping your hands nice and toasty. Lastly, the windshield will have wipers with De-Icer eliminating those annoying streaks and helping the ice and snow thaw quicker.

The Cold Weather Package
  • Floor Liners, Front and Rear
  • Heated Sideview Mirrors
  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • Windshield Wiper De-Icer

Note: Not available with Interior Protection Package (502)

Verdict

This car gets 5 cups of tea out of 5. While it may not be the fastest car or the most stylish it is what its meant to be. A cheap alternative for someone needing an All Wheel Drive vehicle. The only thing I will say is if you're looking at the Front Wheel Drive just save some money and buy a Focus, but for those of you looking at Escapes, this might beat it.
